Jakarta, WartaGlobal.Id – The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has raised concerns over the handling of a series of demonstrations in Indonesia. OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into how authorities managed these public protests.
In a statement delivered via video, Shamdasani said the UN is closely monitoring the recent episodes of violence in Indonesia while highlighting the importance of dialogue to address public concerns. "We are closely following the series of violence in Indonesia within the context of national democracy. We stress the importance of dialogue in responding to public concerns," she said on Tuesday (2/9/2025), cited from the official OHCHR website.
The UN also reminded authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly while maintaining public order in accordance with international norms and standards for managing public demonstrations. The statement further stressed that security forces, including the military, must adhere to the fundamental principles governing the use of power and firearms.
"We call for a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation into all alleged violations of international human rights law, including those related to the use of force," Shamdasani added. This statement comes amid increasing protests across several regions in Indonesia, some of which have resulted in clashes with law enforcement.
Observers note that the UN’s pressure serves as a serious warning to the Indonesian government to ensure that security forces act professionally, lawfully, and without committing human rights violations. Given the history of repressive actions against demonstrators, this international scrutiny is expected to encourage greater transparency and accountability on the ground.
