Strong support has emerged for the 8th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, to take concrete steps to resolve the long-standing conflict in Papua.

One proposed measure is the formation of a special team and the appointment of a special envoy focused on the peace process in the region.Dr. Socratez Yoman, President of the Baptist Church Fellowship of West Papua and a member of regional and international church organizations, stated this during a thanksgiving service for President Prabowo’s election held by the Gerindra Party’s Papua Province Regional Leadership Council at the Swiss-Bellexpress Hotel in Jayapura on April 3, 2025.

Dr. Yoman revealed that he was initially hesitant to attend but was given the opportunity to speak officially representing the voice of the Papuan people in the ruling party’s forum. In his speech, he delivered three main points: his support for Prabowo’s character and integrity, a demand to stop military operations in Nduga and Intan Jaya which he said have harmed the indigenous population, and a call for the President to appoint a special envoy to build communication with all parties, including Papua Merdeka independence fighters.“The violence and division in Papua have gone on for too long and have deeply wounded our people.

Even after regime changes, there has never been a concrete or serious effort to address the political aspirations of the Papuan people,” said Dr. Yoman.Besides Dr. Yoman, the event was also attended by important figures such as the Bishop of Jayapura, Mgr. Yanuarius Teofilus Matopai You.

Despite some technical mistakes during the thanksgiving prayer event, these church leaders showed mutual respect, reflecting a strong moral message for peace.Dr. Yoman’s support emphasizes the importance of a dialogue approach and special attention from the central government to end the Papua conflict in a sustainable and peaceful manner.
