BALI , 22/2/2026, World WartaGlobal. Id
In commemoration of National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2026, environmental organization Sungai Watch organized a coastal clean-up action at Kedonganan Beach, Badung Regency. The activity highlighted a concrete commitment to tackling coastal waste issues and followed the directive of Prabowo Subianto through Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment in implementing the National Movement Indonesia ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, Beautiful).

The beach clean-up involved personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces and Police, residents of the Kedonganan Traditional Village, the expatriate community Clean Up Bali, the Community Empowerment Institution (LPM), nature-lover student groups (Mapala), and various environmental communities. This cross-sector collaboration reflected the spirit of collective action in preserving Bali’s cleanliness and environmental sustainability as a world-class tourism destination.

From the activity, volunteers collected 1,059.09 kilograms of plastic waste, which was then transported to Sungai Watch’s sorting facility to be processed into recycled products. The initiative also served as an educational platform on waste segregation and the types of plastic polluting marine ecosystems.

Kedonganan Beach was selected due to its annual exposure to marine debris, particularly between November and February when monsoon winds and ocean currents carry waste ashore. The recurring condition makes the area a priority for intervention to protect coastal ecosystems and maintain visitor comfort.

I Made Dwi Bagiasa, Field Manager of Sungai Watch, emphasized that the organization’s efforts extend beyond clean-up activities.

“We will process collected plastic waste into recycled products. This step is part of a sustainable waste management solution, ensuring that our efforts go beyond clean-ups and waste collection alone,” he said during the Kedonganan beach clean-up on Saturday (Feb 21, 2026).

The participation of international volunteers underscored global community engagement driven by a shared love for Bali. Their involvement symbolized collective responsibility in safeguarding environmental cleanliness.

In addition to the clean-up, Sungai Watch conducted outreach and educational sessions for local residents on the importance of waste segregation and upstream waste management. The initiative aims to build public awareness that waste issues must be addressed starting from the source.

Meanwhile, Wayan Sutarja, Bendesa Adat of Kedonganan, stated that collaboration among institutions and community elements is essential to preserving the environment, particularly the tourism area of Kedonganan Beach. He reaffirmed full support by mobilizing the traditional village community to strengthen awareness and long-term commitment to maintaining beach cleanliness. (red)
