INDONESIA — Word Warta Global.Id

The Solidarity and Professionalism of Indonesian Advocates (SPASI) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the independence of the legal profession, strengthening legal safeguards for advocates, and upholding the rule of law through the inauguration of nine Regional Leadership Councils (DPCs) and the establishment of four supporting institutions.

The organizational consolidation is expected to strengthen SPASI’s role in promoting professional solidarity, defending advocates facing legal challenges in the course of their duties, and advancing a justice system founded on independence, professionalism, and respect for human rights.

The initiative also reflects the organization’s commitment to developing a professional culture that upholds integrity, accountability, and the supremacy of law.

Four Supporting Institutions Officially Established

In addition to inaugurating nine DPCs, SPASI formalized four supporting institutions designed to strengthen the implementation of its programs and organizational agenda. They are:

  1. SPASI Legal Aid Institute (LBH SPASI)
  2. SPASI Foundation
  3. SPASI Media
  4. Sahabat SPASI (Friends of SPASI)

Each institution has a distinct role in supporting the organization’s broader mission.

LBH SPASI is intended to provide legal assistance and representation, particularly for advocates who require support when facing legal issues connected to the performance of their professional duties.

The SPASI Foundation will focus on managing social initiatives, educational activities, and sustainable professional development programs.

Meanwhile, SPASI Media will serve as a platform for disseminating objective and transparent information about organizational activities, legal developments, and issues concerning advocates’ independence and freedom of expression in carrying out their professional responsibilities.

Sahabat SPASI will provide a platform for building broader community networks and encouraging public participation in supporting the organization’s mission.

Through these four institutions, SPASI seeks to establish an integrated approach encompassing legal defense, professional education, public information, and community engagement.

Protecting the Independence and Dignity of Advocates

SPASI’s declaration also emphasizes the essential role of advocates in safeguarding a democratic state governed by the rule of law and committed to justice.

Advocates do more than provide legal representation to clients. They are an integral part of the justice system, helping protect human rights, ensure due process, and improve public access to justice.

The independence of advocates is a fundamental prerequisite for fair judicial proceedings. Without the freedom to perform their professional duties responsibly and independently, legal representation may face obstacles that could affect the protection of individuals’ legal rights.

For this reason, SPASI calls on all elements of society—including law enforcement agencies, state institutions, professional organizations, and the public—to respect the position of advocates and ensure that they can carry out their responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws.

The organization also emphasizes its commitment to supporting advocates who encounter obstacles, intimidation, or legal difficulties while performing their professional duties.

However, such support is to be pursued within the framework of the rule of law, professional standards, and respect for judicial proceedings.

Jelani Christo and Dadang Suhendar Emphasize Professional Solidarity

SPASI National Executive Council Chairman Jelani Christo, S.H., M.H., together with Secretary-General Dadang Suhendar, S.H., CCLH, emphasized through the declaration that respect for the legal profession is an important component of efforts to safeguard justice and democracy.

Moving forward, SPASI is expected to implement more structured professional defense programs, expand its organizational network across Indonesia, and raise public awareness of the importance of advocates’ independence within the national justice system.

The inauguration of nine regional councils and the establishment of the four supporting institutions are expected to provide a stronger organizational foundation for carrying out these objectives.

A Commitment to Justice and the Rule of Law

Under the spirit of “Peduli, Militan, Luar Biasa” (Caring, Resolute, Extraordinary), SPASI declares its readiness to serve as a platform for solidarity among advocates and to advance the dignity of the legal profession.

Its mission includes strengthening legal protection for advocates, promoting professional integrity, and supporting a justice system that is fair, independent, and respectful of human rights.

The effectiveness of this commitment will ultimately depend on its implementation through concrete programs, transparent organizational governance, and consistent adherence to applicable law.

For SPASI, protecting advocates’ independence is not merely an organizational objective. It is also part of the broader effort to ensure that the justice system remains accessible, accountable, and capable of protecting the rights of all members of society.
