A video circulating on social media, supported by passenger accounts, has drawn public attention to the boarding procedures of the Athanaya Ferry operating on the Padang Bai–Lembar route.
According to witnesses, an individual was allegedly permitted to enter the vessel’s boarding area without queuing or undergoing the standard ticket verification process applied to other passengers.
One passenger questioned the situation, stating, “Why was he allowed to go straight in, sir? We are still waiting in line, while that person entered without having his ticket checked.” in response, Agus, the head of the boarding inspection team, reportedly clarified that the individual was a member of the ship’s crew.
However, the explanation did not fully alleviate concerns among several passengers, who emphasized that boarding and verification procedures should be applied consistently and transparently to prevent any perception of preferential treatment or the possibility of unauthorized boarding.
The incident has attracted public attention, as the accuracy of passenger manifests and strict adherence to boarding protocols are critical components of maritime safety and emergency preparedness.
Members of the public have urged port authorities, ferry operators, and other relevant stakeholders to review existing inspection and supervision procedures at vessel entry points. They also suggested that, when crew members are granted direct access, they should be clearly identified to avoid misunderstandings among passengers.
Passengers further stressed that a disciplined, transparent, and professional boarding process is essential to maintaining safety standards, passenger confidence, and service quality on the Padang Bai–Lembar route.
As of publication, no official statement has been issued by the ferry operator or relevant port authorities regarding the incident or any potential review of boarding procedures.
