The phenomenon of mob justice is back in the public spotlight. In many regions, people suspected of crimes often become targets of mob attacks before they can even go through legal proceedings. Many of these incidents end with serious injuries, or even death.
In a state governed by law, such actions cannot be justified. Anyone suspected of a crime still has the right to due process under the applicable legal system. Conversely, those involved in beatings or assault can also be held criminally liable under the law.
*"Don’t Let Emotions Override the Law"*
*H. Daniar Trisasongko, S.H., http://M.Hum.*, Head of LBH GP Ansor Bali, stressed that law enforcement must be based on the principle of justice, not driven by mob anger.
"This country is a state of law. Anyone suspected of a crime must go through the legal process. No one has the right to take over the role of law enforcement by using violence or resorting to mob justice," Daniar said.
According to Daniar, the culture of mob justice only creates new perpetrators and blurs the line between victim and offender. He warned that people who join in mob beatings that cause serious injury or death can also face criminal prosecution.
Daniar, who leads more than 20 lawyers under LBH GP Ansor Bali, said the organization was formed to provide access to justice for everyone, regardless of ethnicity, religion, race, or social group. LBH GP Ansor Bali is also committed to providing legal aid, legal education, and monitoring court proceedings objectively and professionally.
He urged the public to leave the handling of alleged crimes to law enforcement.
"Don’t let emotions defeat the law. If people respond to crime with more crime, the law loses its authority. Hand every case over to the authorities so it can be processed fairly, transparently, and in accordance with the law," he said.
Fast, professional, and transparent law enforcement is key to preventing people from taking shortcuts through violence. Because in a state of law, justice cannot come from mob rage. It must come from legitimate legal process.
#### *Legal Consequences*
Under *Law No. 1 of 2023 on the National Criminal Code*, those who commit violence together against a person resulting in serious injury or death can face criminal charges. The law provides penalties for mob violence, especially when it leads to serious injury or loss of life.
Daniar also reminded the public about the *presumption of innocence*. Everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty by a court with final and binding legal force.
"Don’t let people who want to punish a criminal end up becoming criminals themselves. Trust law enforcement — the police, prosecutors, and courts — to uphold justice in accordance with the Constitution," he emphasized.
