A narcotics enforcement operation conducted by the Aceh Regional Police's Directorate of Narcotics Investigation (Ditresnarkoba) ended in tragedy on Saturday afternoon (July 25, 2026), after an Indonesian Army (TNI) soldier was fatally shot in what police described as a misfire during a pursuit.
The operation took place on the Juli–Takengon highway in front of the Juli fuel station (SPBU Juli), Cot Meurak Village, Bireuen Regency. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots as officers attempted to apprehend four suspects believed to be involved in the alleged possession of Group II narcotics, etomidate.
Aceh Police Director of Narcotics Investigation, Senior Commissioner Gazali Ahmad, confirmed that one suspect—identified as a member of the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob)—was arrested at the scene. Three other suspects managed to escape and remain the subject of an ongoing manhunt.
"There were four suspected perpetrators inside the vehicle. One suspect, a Brimob officer, has been arrested, while the other three fled and are still being pursued. During the pursuit, a misfire occurred, resulting in one TNI soldier becoming the victim. We sincerely apologize for this incident," Gazali said on Saturday night.
Investigators also seized 150 packages of Pep Etomidate, believed to be connected to the alleged narcotics offense under investigation.
The victim was identified as a Private First Class (Pratu) assigned to Subdenpom IM/1-1 Bireuen. According to available information, he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead. As of Saturday night, his body remained at dr. Fauziah Regional Hospital in Bireuen.
The fatal incident has drawn significant public attention because it occurred during a law enforcement operation involving armed personnel and resulted in the death of a member of another state institution. The case is expected to prompt a comprehensive review of operational procedures, inter-agency coordination, and the use of firearms during high-risk enforcement actions.
As of the publication of this report, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) had not issued an official statement regarding the shooting. Attempts to obtain confirmation from the Commander of Military Resort Command (Korem) 011/Lilawangsa, Brigadier General Ali Imran, had not yet received a response.
Aceh Police stated that the search for the three remaining suspects is continuing. Meanwhile, the public awaits the outcome of a thorough investigation to establish the full chronology of the fatal shooting and determine accountability for the death of the TNI soldier.
