Badung District Attorney Ryan Mahardika sentenced defendant Roman Nazarenko to life imprisonment at a hearing at the Denpasar District Court on Thursday (August 28, 2025).
The Ukrainian defendant was found guilty in the "Sunny Village" drug laboratory case in Tibubeneng Village, North Kuta District, Badung Regency. The prosecutor stated that Roman Nazarenko violated Article 113 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1) and Article 111 paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 paragraph (1) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
"We sentence Roman Nazarenko to life imprisonment and order that the defendant remain in detention," said Ryan Mahardika before the panel of judges chaired by Eni Martiningkrum.
The life imprisonment demand was based on the defendant's actions being deemed inconsistent with government programs and potentially damaging to the Indonesian nation's future.

Roman was also considered to have evasive testimony during the trial and failed to admit his actions. Mitigating factors included the defendant's polite behavior throughout the trial.
The trial continued with the defendant's plea, scheduled for Thursday (September 4, 2025). After the trial, Roman reiterated his denial of being the mastermind behind the "Sunny Village" drug lab.
Aditya Fatra, Roman's attorney, told the media that his client was shocked and objected to the prosecutor's demands.
"He said I wasn't the boss and Oleg Tkachuk was the mastermind behind all of this," said Aditya Fatra, accompanied by Rico Ardika Panjaitan. He also emphasized that the testimony of crown witnesses Mykyta Volovod and Ivan Volovod, who also admitted that Oleg Tkachuk was the mastermind, remains untouched.
