The Indonesian government officially repatriated two British prisoners, Lindsay June Sandiford (68) and Shahab Shahabad (35), to their home country on Thursday (November 6). Both were convicted of drug offenses who had been serving their sentences in Indonesian prisons for years.
In this case, journalists highlighted Yusril's diligent approach, particularly regarding his treatment of Indonesian citizens, while Indonesian citizens were not given special treatment.
Very strange, is there any indication of something!
Lindsay June Sandiford, who was sentenced to death for smuggling 3.7 kilograms of cocaine to Bali, was spared the death penalty and returned to the UK. Meanwhile, Shahab Shahabadi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was also returned to his home country.
This decision sparked criticism and questions about legal equality in Indonesia. Many have questioned why foreign nationals (WNA) involved in drug cases can be repatriated, while Indonesian citizens (WNI) involved in similar cases must serve heavy sentences.
The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, explained that the repatriation of the two prisoners was based on the request of the British Government and was agreed upon through practical arrangements with the Indonesian Government.
The repatriation of the two British prisoners involved in drug cases has raised concerns about the potential entry of drug networks into Indonesia. This decision is considered to make it easier for foreign nationals involved in drug cases to return to their home countries and potentially resume their illegal activities.
