Gurua Village Fund Controversy: Chief Accused of Failure, Regent Urged to Act

Wednesday, March 19, 2025

Labuha, World.WartaGlobal.id  – The management of village funds in Gurua, Pulau Makian District, has become a hot topic of debate. Village Chief Basri Hi. Muhammad is accused of failing to manage the budget for the past two years, sparking unrest among residents. Pressure is mounting on South Halmahera Regent, Hasan Ali Bassam Kasuba, to take immediate action and remove him from office.

Makian activist Muhammad Saifudin believes the mismanagement of village funds has significantly harmed the community. He alleges that the village chief’s negligence has led to serious financial irregularities.

"For two years, Gurua’s village funds have been managed chaotically. This is more than just negligence; it has had a severe impact on the people," Saifudin stated on Wednesday (March 19, 2024).

The accusations intensified after the 2023 third-phase village fund had to be returned to the state treasury due to unsubmitted financial reports for the first and second phases. As a result, the 2024 budget was cut by 20 percent.

Moreover, several village programs are suspected to be fictitious, while physical development projects have been left abandoned. There are also allegations of fund embezzlement by the village treasurer due to a lack of oversight from the village chief.

The situation is further complicated by concerns over the inconsistencies of the Village Community Empowerment Agency (DPMD), which is accused of selective enforcement.

"Four other village chiefs have already been dismissed, yet Gurua, despite its clear financial mismanagement, is left untouched. What’s really going on here?" Saifudin questioned.

He warned that if no decisive action is taken by the Regent, social tensions in Gurua could escalate.

"The local government must act immediately before the situation spirals out of control," he concluded.
