Indonesia’s Immigration Breakthrough: Global Citizenship Policy Introduced

The Directorate General of Immigration within the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections has officially launched the Global Citizenship of Indonesia (GCI), a groundbreaking policy designed to tackle the challenges of dual citizenship. This new approach grants an unlimited stay permit to foreign nationals with strong ties to Indonesia through descent, family, history, or other close affiliations.Minister of Immigration and Correctional Affairs Agus Andrianto explained that the GCI policy allows foreign nationals connected to Indonesia to live and participate in the country without renouncing their original citizenship. “GCI is a solution to answer the dual citizenship policy with the broad right to stay for foreign nationals who have strong ties with Indonesia, without changing their citizenship status and without violating the rules of other nations,” Agus said.
He emphasized that this policy reflects Indonesia’s ability to adapt to global trends while maintaining its legal sovereignty over citizenship matters.

The new system is inspired by similar models, such as the Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI), which have proven effective in fostering ties with diaspora communities. The Directorate General of Immigration is prepared to implement GCI with a focus on legal certainty, service efficiency, and enhancing Indonesia’s international competitiveness.Eligible applicants include former Indonesian citizens, descendants of former citizens up to the second degree, spouses of Indonesian citizens, and individuals married to Indonesian nationals.
However, the policy excludes foreign nationals from countries formerly part of Indonesian territory involved in separatist activities or those with backgrounds in foreign military, intelligence, or civil service.
Applications for GCI can be submitted online through the government’s evisa.imigrasi.go.id platform, which streamlines the application process by integrating visa issuance, limited stay permits, permanent stay permit extensions, and re-entry permits.

Minister Agus concluded, “Indonesian Immigration will always respond to global needs and challenges. GCI is proof that our immigration policy is not static but will continue to transform following the development of the times.”
