Ngurah Rai Immigration Office Announces the Death of Australian Detainee While Awaiting Deportation

Wednesday, July 15, 2026

BADUNG, Indonesia – Warta global Id
A tragic incident has occurred at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office after an Australian national identified by the initials CJMH (39) died while being held in immigration detention on Friday evening, July 10, 2026, as he awaited deportation proceedings.

According to an official statement from the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, the case originated from a public complaint received in late March 2026 regarding the alleged misuse of the individual's stay permit.

Following a series of investigations and clarification requests, immigration authorities concluded that CJMH had violated Indonesia's immigration regulations.

Although he had been given several opportunities to resolve his immigration status voluntarily, CJMH repeatedly failed to comply with official summonses. On Friday, July 10, an immigration team escorted him from his residence in Jimbaran, South Kuta, accompanied by local community representatives, before placing him in the detention facility pending deportation.

Later that afternoon, officers conducted routine monitoring of detainees. During a scheduled CCTV inspection, they noticed that CJMH had remained motionless inside the restroom for an unusual period.

Officers immediately entered the area and found him unconscious. They promptly checked his vital signs, administered first aid, including oxygen support, and coordinated with the nearest hospital to dispatch an ambulance.

Medical personnel provided emergency treatment at the scene before transporting him to Bali Jimbaran General Hospital. However, CJMH was pronounced dead while en route to the hospital. Preliminary findings from the hospital indicated that a suspected heart attack may have been a contributing factor.

Following the incident, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office coordinated with the Badung Police Resort and the South Kuta Police Sector. Police officers conducted a crime scene investigation, while the official determination of the cause of death remains under the authority of the police and medical authorities.

Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Bugie Kurniawan, expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.

He emphasized that immigration officers had carried out routine supervision in accordance with established procedures and responded immediately after detecting the emergency through CCTV monitoring.

The Immigration Office also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability throughout the handling of the incident. Authorities continue to cooperate with the Indonesian National Police, the hospital, and representatives of the Australian Government to ensure that all subsequent procedures are conducted in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

The incident serves as a solemn reminder that
while immigration laws must be enforced firmly, humanitarian principles remain an essential part of every law enforcement process. As the official investigation continues, all parties are encouraged to respect the legal process and allow the family to grieve in peace.
